Friday Night (2022) In October 2021, Paddy Maloney, the band leader of iconic Irish traditional music band ‘The Chieftains’, passed away. Soon after, I bought a record player & was able to listen to many of the albums of their music that my mother had collected in the 1970s & 80s. She played them most when it was a Friday night. Dad had his ritual of meeting up with his friends to bet on horse races, have a beer & a yarn. Mum would be ‘transported’ by the Chieftains’ traditional instruments, many of which she had listened to & watched being played, when she was growing up.

The gravel sprays as he shoots down the driveway
It’s Friday night & the old man’s...‘goin’ to town’
Just a few beers…a few bets…and a few mates
Time to take the pressure down

The record player…launches a new world
With melodies from ancient times
Memories come coursing through my mother
Triggered by time-honoured lines

Tuning in…I feel my mood affected
Sinking in…a wave has me upended
Whistling…like a bird in the morning chorus
Moving in time…to the rhythm on the goat skin

Her mind unwinds…as she savours the music
She tells me tunes that have a ‘lovely lilt’
Takes a seat…after another long, long week
Marvels at the warm sun on the foothills
