about

My Grandad Willie & his brother Tom were conscripted into the NZ Army in 1917 to fight in World War I, as allies to Britain. Near the end of the war in 1918, they both returned to their family in Corra, County Kerry, Ireland, for two weeks.
Their homeland had been a Colony of the English since the 12th Century, with numerous rebellions over that time. There was a ‘failed’ uprising in Easter 1916…though it triggered the conditions for a full-scale War of Independence in 1919. Several of Willie & Tom’s siblings were members of the ‘Irish Volunteers’ -an armed fighting force organizing for the next uprising.
The song title relates to the fact that their entire family was only ever fully together for these two weeks of their military leave…an eleventh child had been born after Willie left for New Zealand in 1901.
The song has four parts -the first and third are what I surmise the viewpoints of their siblings were. The second & fourth are what I’m guessing were the viewpoints of Willie & his brother Tom. It recounts the impacts of historical events & the ironies of having ‘a foot in each camp’. Now, more than a hundred years on, the relationship between the Irish and the English is still evolving...though I think it’s fair to say there’s quite a high degree of cooperation between the two and a growing sense of equality.
